More Good Reading!

With summer well underway, here are a few more titles to try:

The Classics:

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

I first read this while camping one summer and have read it every time we take a summer camping trip since! Each time I read it I admire once more Tolstoy’s grasp of language and gain more insight into human nature.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

A classic novel of American life in the suburbs of New York! If you haven’t read it yet, don’t miss this one!

Historical:

Rabble in Arms by Kenneth Roberts

A Revolutionary war novel with a different twist on Benedict Arnold.  Lots of details about army life and the Saratoga campaign.

The King’s General by Daphne du Maurier

Though dark as du Maurier’s novels are, still one of her best. Sir Richard and Honour’s romance is tainted by the results of envy and a tragic accident.

General/Mainstream fiction:

Safely Home by Randy Alcorn

A story of the persecution of Christians in China. One you won’t soon forget.

Christy by Catherine Marshall

Christy Huddleston is young and naive.  Her coming-of-age and adjustments to life in the Smoky Mountains.

Mrs. Mike by Nancy Freedman

Who could *not* fall in love with Canadian Mountie Sgt. Mike Flannigan?

Biography:

A Time to Be in Earnest by P.D. James

Famed mystery writer James’ autobiography.  Succinct and enlightening, one cannot but be impressed with her writing ability and practical knowledge.

Light Fiction/Easy Reads:

Papa’s Wife by Thyra Bjorn

This wholesome story of how Maria plots and convinces Pontus Franzon to marry her and emigrate to America (along with their eight children) is entertaining and a fast read!

Tending Roses by Lisa Wingate

There are lessons to be learned in this story of balancing relationships and priorities in a young family. Grandma Rose is down -to- earth, realistic, and a ‘salty’ character.
